A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to prevent restoration.
Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment.
The word “extraction” might sound scary, but here at Bridge Creek Dental, we are committed to helping our patients feel safe and comfortable through their dental procedures.
The Tooth Extraction Process
How Is a Tooth Extracted?
The extraction process usually begins with numbing the area around the tooth with local anesthesia. Once our dentist determines the area is numb, they will then use special dental instruments to loosen the tooth and then remove it from the mouth.
We offer a comfort menu to make your visit easier, with relaxing options for every person.
Caring for Your Smile After an Extraction
As with any surgery, it is important to have good oral care after it takes place. We suggest the following strategies to care for your smile after you’ve had a tooth extracted.
- Take pain medication as prescribed, or use over-the-counter options like ibuprofen.
- Use ice or a cold pack on the side of the face for 10 minutes at a time.
- Leave the gauze in your mouth for 3–4 hours after the extraction, changing as necessary.
- Avoid drinking from a straw for 24 hours after the procedure.
- Eat soft foods until the area starts to heal.
- Don’t smoke, vape, or chew gum.
If you have any questions about your car you can always call us to ask.
